WHY IS IT THE BIG 4 RIVALS FAIL IN THE BIG GAMES?

BRADFORD :- Well known for being big game bottlers, but why? Overall I believe the squad is large but extremely average, very few big game match winners.

From full back, Withers is solid and dependable, but has neither great hands or real pace, just average in every department. On the wings, Vaikona is extremely powerful but lacks genuine pace, Vainakolo lacks fitness and durability, has he got brittle bones?

In the centre, Scott Naylor is the worst international I can recall for many a year. He can't pass a ball, he can't catch a ball and can only tackle around the shoulders. It must be great to defend against this guy, if he catches the ball he wont pass it, if he does it will go straight to the linesman. Lee Gilmour is a similar mould only fractionally better, Wigan let him go and look how bad they are! That alone says it all.

At half back, Robbie Paul is the only game breaker they have. However Robbie is not a naturally creative player, more a broken field runner. Paul Deacon is just crap. All he can do is kick and then he needs to be twenty yards away from the defence. Never runs the ball, easy meat to a defence. Brandon Costin is another, not very fast, not very skilful and definitely a waste of money, unless you want to take someone out off the ball. Leon Pryce has potential but I believe at full back, has the height, the pace and decent hands to link as an extra stand off.

In the pack, Brian McDermott would have trouble breaking wind never mind a tackle. The best advert you will see for a voluntary tackle. James Lowes is a danger 5 metres out with little kicks, but Douglas Bader could have made more runs from dummy half than this guy does. Stuart Fielden is a good lad but needs too tuck his chin in, you are asking for it to be hit, Paul Anderson is a total liability in defence, a big tub of lard who has the turning circle of the QE2, Joe Vagana needs oxygen after 10 minutes.

In the back row, Mike Forshaw a loose forward, don’t make me laugh, you need good hands to play there at this level. Jamie Peacock is strong and fast, but wears blinkers. Will someone tell him about looking for support. Daniel Gartner, is a big strong lad, who is a prop playing second row. My last word is for Lee Radford, get some ambition son, how long are you going to be happy playing 5 games a year, you should have stayed at Hull.

WIGAN :- The club with big names and little talent! Love buying big names past their sell by date.

At full back hard to fault Kris Radlinski, maybe another yard of speed wouldn’t go a miss. Brett Dallas is a good lad, though another with brittle bones, Brian Carney, just palin strong and average. David Hodgson, go back to Halifax son you might get a regular game there.

In the centre, Jamie Ainscough is the second worst signing in Super League (only Julian O’Niell is worse), a centre who can't pass, what use is he to a good winger! Paul Johnson is injury prone, could be to do with giving a lot of size away to the other centres. This might explain so many missed tackles. Gary Connolly still one of the best centres going around when he decides to play, unfortunately not very often these days.

Stand off Julian O’Niell is just rubbish, not good enough for the Queensland Cowboys, that says it all. What use is a stand off who does not know what a three quarter is! Adrian Lam likes going on little darting runs, but doesn’t know where he is going. His team mates don’t either!

In the front row I like Terry O’Connor, the only real prop on the books. Craig Smith has come over for a holiday, if you’re lucky will give you 5 games this season. Terry Newton is a good support player, but his discipline lets him down when the pressure is on. Mick Cassidy needs a snazzy head gear to get noticed these days, not that he had much to offer before apart from defence. David Furner never had it to loose, a vastly over rated player in Australia, just a worker, why pay big bucks for that, there are plenty of work horse over here. Harvey Howard is just great, can always be relied upon to give away silly penalties, when you need them most. So far over the hill he’s a distant memory.

Last but not least Andy Farrell. Does not know whether to play stand off or loose forward. Trouble is he does not have the talent for Stand off, nor the commitment needed for the pack. Only has three plays, drive then ball in, run to the right and drop the ball inside, or a wide pass to the left. He scores a lot of points with the boot, but then again, there are no defenders running at you when you kick for goal!

LEEDS :- Good old Leeds, the team that is going to win all before them every year, then by September are building for next year.

Francis Cummings is just a good player with basics skills, but no bottle or positional sense. Karl Pratt got a bit of speed and a decent pair of hands, but only a decent club player. Chev Walker would have trouble catching a high ball, even if we fitted radar and a satellite dish. Marcus St Hilaire is a full back playing on the wing, for which he is not fast enough. Mark Calderwood needs a good chip butty and some weight training programmes, potentially a very good winger in 2 years.

Tonie Carroll is a big strong fast lad, who worries a defence when fit, but that’s his problem always injured. Keith Senior is very good going forward but a liability in defence. Put a dummy runner in front of him and its all over, confusion reigns. Ben Walker is loved by the media at the moment, but how long before people realise he can't tackle. That’s why Brisbane didn’t want him. Ryan Sheridan plays three games a year, usually against the bottom three clubs, wasn’t he awesome against Wakefield in the cup. Rob Burrow should be scrum half, a little naïve but will give 100% and always dangerous, especially amongst the forwards. Don’t kill him at hooker please Daryl!

In the pack Barrie McDermott is top notch, my kind of prop, but he is surrounded by let downs. We have Darren 'flop a lot' Fleary, a real pudding, Wayne 'should I be in line outs' McDonald, a player who needs 20 yards to get going, and last but not least, Matt 'will someone take the wax out of my ears so I can hear the ref call five and last' Diskin. Must have an IQ of at least 20.

Matt Adamson is a great forward for at least 5 games a year, if you don’t believe me ask Penrith. Andy Hay wants to play on the wing in big games, loves nothing better to shout at the referee when that little half back jumps up to tackle him. Kevin Sinfield I like. Not as good yet as people make out, but he will get there, reminds me of Paul Sculthorpe 3 years ago.

HULL :- The 'we will win a game one day when it matters' club. Must be the slowest Side in the League, certainly the slowest pack in the league.

Full back Steve Prescott is ok under the high ball and going forward, but can't tackle front on. Gareth Raynor had a purple patch last year, but I predict will be the next Leroy Rivett, once people start hitting him with high bombs. Matt Crowther is the worst winger I can remember seeing, since Alex Murphy signed Mike Carrington for Saints from Wales. If he could not kick, he would be playing in the summer conference.

In the centres, Dion Bird is of Northern Ford Premiership standard, slow gangly and useless. Toa Kohe Love is great going forward but a total liability in defence. Paul Newlove turns him inside out every time Saints play them. Graham Mackay is a big lump of lard with a bit of speed, that’s it end of story.

In the halves, Paul Cooke has good hands and a good kicking game, but can't tackle for toffee. Richard Horne will make a good half back if his coach will allow him to play there. May have to move clubs to play where he should be. Tony Smith just a support player with a small amount of talent, small being the key word.

In the pack, Lee Jackson is still playing the same game he did 12 years ago. Time to retire mate. The rest of the pack are just solid grafters, apart from Jason Smith who is world class. Vastly in need of a fast game busting forward, solid grafters with no speed will win nothing. Give Jason Smith some help!

THE LAST WORD FOR CHRIS CAISLEY :- Don’t be angry at Ian Millward, he has just given you two points, the only way you can get to the Grand Final, is to avoid Saints on the way. By giving you two points it makes it more likely you will finish in the top two along side Saints. Getting to the Grand Final is worth more than the £35k you lost on Saturday. Be thankful, at least you get a good pay day for getting beat in the big one again!

Until the next time
